ArcelorMittal Mexico Temporarily Shuts Down Its Blast Furnace as an Operational Safety Measure
Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, July 30, 2025.
As part of its commitment to the safety of its employees and the integrity of its facilities, ArcelorMittal Mexico announces that it has decided to temporarily shut down its blast furnace, which entails the provisional suspension of long steel production.
This measure was taken following a series of events that compromised the safe operation of the facilities, resulting in critical failures in the boilers that sustain the air blast required for blast furnace operations.
“We are aware that this decision presents significant operational and logistical challenges, but the safety and well-being of our employees will continue to be our absolute priority,” the company stated.
It is worth noting that this decision comes amid an especially complex environment for the steel industry in Mexico, which is facing unprecedented pressures due to import tariffs imposed by the United States, the sustained decline in international steel prices, and growing threats to the operational viability of companies in the sector.
Nevertheless, the steelmaker remains strong in the country and therefore reaffirms its commitment to safe and responsible operations. The company is working to restore the technical conditions necessary to resume production, with the least possible impact on its employees, customers, suppliers, and the community of Lázaro Cárdenas.
